Welcome to Reggio Calabria!

Hello everyone! Today we are talking about Reggio Calabria, a wonderful city located on the eastern coast of the Strait of Messina, in Calabria. With its 171,246 inhabitants, it is the capital of the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria and the largest municipality in the region. Reggio Calabria is also very important from an institutional point of view, as it is home to the Regional Council of Calabria.

One of the things that makes Reggio Calabria so interesting is its role in the Great Reggio Urban Agglomeration, an urban agglomeration that gathers the various municipalities on the Calabrian side of the Strait of Messina. Together with the metropolitan area of Messina, it forms the Metropolitan Area of the Strait of Messina, a conurbation with strong integration between the municipalities on the two sides of the strait.

History

Reggio Calabria is the oldest city of Greek Calabria and has a thousand-year history. It was an important and flourishing city of Magna Graecia and today retains the memory of this glorious past in the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria, which exhibits collections of artifacts from Magna Graecia and the famous Riace Bronzes, among its identifying symbols.

Unfortunately, much of the settlement was destroyed by the Messina earthquake of 1908, but the city was rebuilt in a modern and welcoming way, with an urban layout that extends for about 32 km along the eastern coast of the Strait of Messina and eastwards, from the sea to the mountains, for another 30 km or so, with areas of mid-coastal, hilly and mountainous terrain.

Reggio Calabria: history, geography and curiosities in an ancient city.

Physical geography

One of the strengths of Reggio Calabria is its privileged position, which makes it easily accessible by both sea and land. The city overlooks the Strait of Messina, a 3.5 km wide stretch of sea that separates it from Messina on the opposite bank, and forms the Metropolitan Area of the Strait of Messina, the geographic center of the Mare Nostrum of Roman times.

Reggio Calabria is located at the southern tip of the "boot", at the foot of the Aspromonte, and its municipal territory covers 236.02 km², from a minimum altitude of 0 meters to a maximum of 1,803 meters above sea level. The historic center has been rebuilt at an average altitude of 31 meters above sea level and extends from the Fiumara dell'Annunziata in the north to the Fiumara del Calopinace in the south.

Curiosities

Reggio Calabria is a city rich in history, culture and natural beauty, and there are many curiosities to discover. For example, in the hamlet of Bocale, the city is crossed by the 38th parallel North and a Monument to the 38th parallel has been erected with a Carrara marble monolith. In addition, in the municipality of Palizzi, in the metropolitan area, there is the southernmost point of the Italian peninsula, the Promontory of Eracle, now Capo Spartivento (Calabria), where the Capo Spartivento Lighthouse was built in 1867, at an altitude of 64 meters above sea level.

Conclusion

In summary, Reggio Calabria is a wonderful city that retains the memory of its glorious past, but looks to the future with serenity and optimism. With its privileged position, cultural and natural heritage, and welcoming atmosphere, it is the perfect place to visit and live. See you in Reggio Calabria!
