San Cassiano

Welcome to San Cassiano

Hello friends! Today I'll talk to you about San Cassiano, a tourist destination located in Italy, in the Val Badia region, Bolzano autonomous province. Here the predominant language spoken is Ladin. San Cassiano is known for its natural beauty and more: there are many things to do and see, in every season of the year.

The beauty of San Cassiano

San Cassiano is located in a side valley of Val Badia. Here flows the Rio di San Cassiano, which flows into the Gadera river. The resort is crossed by the provincial road that leads to the Valparola pass, passing through Armentarola, a hamlet of Badia. Here you can reach the Falzarego pass, a popular destination for nature and ski lovers. From Falzarego you can take the Lagazuoi cable car and return to Armentarola through beautiful ski slopes.

San Cassiano is also famous for its summer activities, such as walks and hikes on naturalistic paths, or fishing in the rivers. There are also canoe trips and rafting for the more adventurous. No matter what season it is, there is always something interesting to do in San Cassiano.

San Cassiano: nature, art, and tourism in Val Badia.

An ancient history

San Cassiano has an ancient history, before it became a tourist destination. In the past it was used as grazing land for livestock. The hamlet of Armentarola, near San Cassiano, takes its name from the Ladin term "armenc", which means "livestock". In 1296, the names of the settlements of San Cassiano were mentioned, consisting of individual farms or masi, called Vila in Ladin.

San Cassiano then took its name from its patron saint, San Cassiano, to whom the local church is dedicated. The church was built in 1782 and has a painting on the main altar, which represents the martyrdom of San Cassiano, a work by the painter Carlo Henrici from Silesia.

Culture and art

San Cassiano also has a Ladin museum, which was inaugurated in 2011. The museum is called Museum Ladin Collezione e Attività del Ursus Ladinicus and is connected to the Tor Castle. Inside you can admire some fossils found in the area and the remains of the bear found in 1987 in the Grotta Sulla Cima Cunturines.

Economy

Tourism is the main source of income for the inhabitants of San Cassiano. Here many work in the tourism industry, which is thriving in every season of the year. Almost 2/3 of the population, essentially of Ladin origin, is involved in tourism.

San Cassiano hosts numerous hotels, restaurants and shops, which offer excellent services to tourists. The city adapts to the demands of tourists, providing services suitable for every age and interest.

Conclusions

San Cassiano is a fantastic place to spend your holidays, both in winter and summer. If you love the mountains, nature and want to enjoy a half-day on skis or a bike ride through the woods, there are many options available. If you love history and art, don't miss the Ladin Museum and the San Cassiano Church. In any case, I assure you that you won't be able to wait to come back.
