Physical geography

Climate

Asti's climate can be described as humid continental. The Asti territory has two rainy periods and two less rainy periods. On average, Asti receives 667 millimetres of rainfall per year, less than the national average of 970 millimetres.

The rainiest months are April and November, with a higher peak in the latter. January is the driest month. Summer is characterized by strong but infrequent thunderstorms. The average annual temperature is 12.7 °C, with maximum peaks in July and minimum peaks in January.

History

Asti has a long and rich history. During Roman times, the city was known as "Hasta" and became an important city thanks to its strategic position between Turin and Liguria.

In the Middle Ages, Asti gained municipal autonomy and became a very important commercial centre. Asti merchants developed trade and credit throughout Europe, reaching the peak of their activity between the 12th and 13th centuries.

Traditions

One of Asti's most famous traditions is the Palio, a very ancient event that takes place in September. The competition involves a horse race without a saddle between representatives of the ancient districts.

Asti is also famous for its wines, especially Asti Spumante, which is produced from white Moscato grapes. Every year in September, the Douja d'Or wine competition is held, one of the most important in Italy.
