Avigliano has a very ancient history. In fact, the first documents and archaeological finds date back to the high Middle Ages. In 1137 in Lagopesole, a hamlet of Avigliano, the Council of Melfi V was held, which was also attended by the emperor Lotario II of Supplimburgo. In the following century, Frederick II of Swabia built a castle in Lagopesole, where the first Dominican convent in Basilicata was built. In 1579, Avigliano was established as a university of the Kingdom and the powers of the feudal lords were limited. In 1612, the fiefdom of Avigliano passed to the Doria family. Finally, in 1694, due to an earthquake and a famine, the population vowed to erect a votive chapel to the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel.
