The first piece of information about the area dates back to 957, when Emperor Otto II of Saxony granted the Seriana Valley as a fiefdom to the Bishop of Bergamo. At that time, Ama was still uninhabited and was used as a refuge by the shepherds of the surrounding areas.
According to an ancient legend, the village of Ama was formed by some residents of Aviatico who, in 999, at the peak of Millenarianism, decided to abandon their homes and move to more sheltered places.
