Averara

Discovering Averara, a small town immersed in nature

If you're looking for a place immersed in nature, where you can spend some time away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Averara is definitely the place for you! This small town of just 173 inhabitants, located in the province of Bergamo in Lombardy, is nestled in the beautiful Val Averara, a lateral valley of the Val Brembana. The territory, composed of numerous small settlements, offers a wide choice of excursions suitable for every need.

Discovering the history of Averara

The first documents attesting to the existence of Averara date back to 917 and since then the town has undergone many changes. In the Middle Ages, for example, Averara played an important role as it is still the last town on the Mercatorum road leading to Valtellina, in Canton Grigioni starting from the Seriana valley. The territory was equipped with a customs office and two towers for preventive purposes. However, with the construction of the Via Priula in 1593, the importance of trade along the Mercatorum road diminished drastically, leading Averara to an inevitable decline. After many years of political changes, the Kingdom of Italy was born in 1861 and the history of Averara proceeded quietly without any significant episodes.

Averara: between history, symbolism, and nature

The symbolism of Averara

The coat of arms and flag of the town were adopted recently, in 2011. The coat of arms depicts a tower, a symbol of the medieval period in which Averara played an important role, and a knight representing the image of Saint Alberto, the patron saint of the town. The flag, on the other hand, is white with green edges and the coat of arms of the town is present in the center.

The issue of migration since 1950

After 1950, the entire region experienced a massive depopulation due to migration to the lower Brembana valley and the Lombard plain. Unfortunately, Averara also experienced this problem, with the resident population being reduced by two thirds. However, despite this, the town continues to be a gem to discover for nature and tranquility lovers.

In conclusion, if you're looking for a peaceful place immersed in nature, Averara is definitely the place for you. The history of this small town of just 173 inhabitants is rich in events and decline, but today it offers a wide choice of excursions suitable for all needs. The coat of arms and flag of the town represent the history and symbolism of Averara, and despite the issue of migration, the town remains a true gem to discover.
