Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Avegno, a scattered municipality located in the metropolitan city of Genoa in Liguria. With its 2520 inhabitants, Avegno is a picturesque place that offers hilly landscapes and the succession of streams such as the Recco and the Arbora river.

Physical Geography

The territory of Avegno is nestled in the high valley of the Recco stream and runs along the 333 state road of Uscio, which from the Gulf of Paradiso of Recco climbs towards the Caprile hill. Here, by crossing the ridge, you can descend towards Gattorna, the Moconesi hamlet and the Fontanabuona valley.

The mountains surrounding Avegno are many, the highest being Monte Borgo, Monte Bello, Monte Cornua, Monte Orsena (where the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Caravaggio is located), Monte Cassinea, Monte del Prè and Monte San Pietro.

History

The history of Avegno dates back to the 13th century, when the church of San Pietro first appeared in an ancient document. The territory became later a fiefdom of the Malaspina family.

During the French domination of Napoleon Bonaparte, Avegno obtained its administrative autonomy. In 1814 it was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia and subsequently to the Kingdom of Italy. In 1877, the Salto hamlet joined the territory of Avegno.

Symbols

The municipal coat of arms of Avegno is represented by a silver bell on a blue field, symbol of the famous economic activity related to the local production of bells from the Picasso foundries. In addition, a red cross on a silver field recalls the cross of St. George of the Republic of Genoa.
