Let's discover the history

The territory of the current province of Imperia was previously part of the Province of Nice, until much of it was ceded to France with the Treaty of Turin in 1860. The remaining portion, composed of the districts of Porto Maurizio and San Remo, was then named the province of Porto Maurizio until 1923, when the merger of the capital Porto Maurizio into the new city of Imperia led to a change in the name of the province of Porto Maurizio to the province of Imperia.

Symbols and honors

The official coat of arms of the province of Imperia was approved by decree on February 13, 1927. The province was awarded the Gold Medal of Military Valor for the sacrifices of its people and for its activity in the partisan fight during World War II.

There are numerous foreign communities in the province of Imperia, representing 10.66% of the then provincial population, with the municipality of Sanremo hosting the largest number of foreign residents.
