Welcome to Brucoli, a charming seaside village located in the province of Syracuse, in Sicily. The town is situated next to a natural canal, flanked by numerous Neolithic caves that are still visible today. Brucoli is a fishing village, born many centuries ago.

The history of Brucoli

According to legend, Brucoli was founded by the Greeks of the Peloponnese, led by Lamis, who made their first stop on their journey here. This area was in fact a stopover for ships on their way inland.

Over the centuries, Brucoli became increasingly important thanks to its strategic location. In the fifteenth century, the seaside village was included in the Crown of Aragon's Chamber of Queens, as an important trading center. In 1467, Governor Giovanni Cabastida built the Brucoli Castle to protect the market and warehouses, where goods were loaded for export.

Places to visit in Brucoli

There is plenty to see in Brucoli. On the plateau of Gisira, is the Sanctuary of Madonna dell'Adonai, with its attached hermitage. The cave that houses the sanctuary was already in use by the Greeks, and according to tradition, the figure of Mary with Baby Jesus painted on the back wall was created by Bishop of Lipari Agatone in the fourth century.

A stroll along the Brucoli canal, with its white houses, cobalt sky, and harbor, is a wonderful experience. You can also admire the Brucoli Castle, built in the mid-fifteenth century, with its small church in one wing and two bell tower-like turrets on the south-western tower.

Nature around Brucoli

If you love nature, the area around Brucoli is perfect for you. The Porcària stream, which flows down to "Baia Arcile," is flanked by numerous bronze-age tomb cavities. In the past, the river was navigable for a long stretch inland, and was used to transport goods from the coast to the interior.

From the top of the torrent walls, you can admire a spectacular view of the coast. Here you can also find the Brucoli lighthouse, which guides ships to the canal-port.
