Here, you can find everything you need to know about the culture, history, and geography of this charming city.

Atripalda: history and beauty of the Campanian city.

Physical geography

Territory

Atripalda is located in western Irpinia and stretches along the Sabato river. The regional capital is very close, and the two cities are closely connected. Its location makes Atripalda the ideal base for exploring the beautiful surrounding areas.

Seismology

Atripalda is located in the Irpinia seismic district. As a result, the city was hit by the Atripalda earthquake in 1980, during which there were more than 1,500 homeless people and three deaths. However, although the city is in seismic zone 2 (average seismicity), most buildings have been renovated and rebuilt to ensure the safety of residents.

Origins of the name

The name Atripalda probably derives from the noble Lombard of Avellino Atrepald, who owned extensive agricultural land in the Sabato valley. In the past, some historians had confused Tropoaldo, an ancient fortified settlement near the Ufita river, with Atripalda because the two toponyms had a strong resemblance. However, the toponym Atripalda has its own history.

History

The origins of Atripalda are very ancient. Around the year one thousand, the first nucleus of the city was born where the Sannite settlement of Abellinum was located. After the agricultural reforms promoted by the Gracchi, Abellinum became a Roman colony thanks to Silla. Many former legionaries of Emperor Augustus settled in the city of Civita, which in turn was incorporated into Regio II Apulia et Calabria. Over the centuries, the last indigenous residents were gradually absorbed by the Abellinati, learning the Latin language and participating in the greatness and splendor of the city.

Today, Atripalda is a thriving city where you can appreciate the traditions of Campania, including cuisine, culture, and art. It will be a pleasure for you to get to know the city, its places, and its welcoming population. Come and visit us in Atripalda!
