History

Antiquity

Are you fascinated by ancient history? The province of Teramo was inhabited by ancient peoples such as the Piceni and Pretuzi. The Piceni territories extended for much of Marche, while the Pretuzi occupied the Teramo countryside. Thanks to the presence of about ten thousand tombs in the Campovalano necropolis, it could be thought that the Piceni lived in these places.

Middle Ages and modern age

In the Middle Ages, the Teramo countryside was occupied by the Byzantines and the Lombards. Teramo becomes the seat of one of the first dioceses in Abruzzo, housed in the former cathedral church of Santa Maria Aprutiense, now the church of Sant'Anna. In the twelfth century, the city was besieged and destroyed by the Norman count Roberto di Loretello. Many toponyms of large and small centers, often fractions, such as Garrufo di Sant'Omero or Sant'Atto di Teramo, would derive precisely from the Lombard presence.

Conclusions

The province of Teramo is a must-see destination for those who love nature and landscape beauty. Between the mountains, the valleys and the Adriatic Sea, the province of Teramo offers an explosive mix of beauty and ancient charm. Come and immerse yourself in this enchanting region and discover its millenary history. We are waiting for you with open arms!
