Welcome to the province of Chieti

Hello everyone, today I will talk to you about the Province of Chieti, a beautiful part of Abruzzo, in Italy. The Province of Chieti has a population of approximately 400,000 people and covers an area of 2,709 km². It includes 104 municipalities, and is the second largest province in Abruzzo after L'Aquila. The Province of Chieti faces the Adriatic Sea to the east and borders the provinces of Pescara, L'Aquila, and the Molise provinces of Isernia and Campobasso.

Physical geography

The territory of the Province of Chieti is characterized by hilly and mountainous areas. The region has a very diverse landscape with parallel valleys where rivers of varying size flow. In the northern extremity, you can admire rough and barren mountains, while the southern part of the territory is characterized by gentle hills and small towns. Hydrography

Thanks to the karst phenomena in the mountains, many water resources can be found in both surface and underground in the Province of Chieti. The main rivers are Aterno-Pescara, Sangro, and Trigno, Alento, Aventino, Foro, and Sinello. The meteoric water that falls on these mountains reappears downstream, with sources that sometimes reach massive dimensions, such as the river Verde in Fara San Martino. The Province of Chieti has a significant resource of groundwater, which is used for irrigation and beverage production.

Orography

The provincial territory of Chieti is mainly characterized by the Maiella, the second highest mountain in the Appennini range, which rises to 2,793 meters in its highest peak, Mount Amaro. Its orography includes 61 mountains and 75 hills of varying sizes and shapes. The Maiella is a limestone massif rich in karstic phenomena but poor in surface water. In fact, the meteoric water infiltrates into the soil and re-emerges downstream as springs. The eastern slope of the mountain range is characterized by gorges and valleys, while the western slope is homogeneous and characterized by a single incision, the Macchia di Caramanico.

In conclusion, the Province of Chieti is a wonderful region of Abruzzo, characterized by the Maiella and its mountains, rivers, green valleys, and the Adriatic Sea. This region is particularly appealing for nature lovers and offers numerous outdoor activities, including hiking, panoramic walks, visits to natural parks, and reserves. If you have the opportunity to visit the Province of Chieti, do it, you won't regret it!
