Ateleta

Ateleta: a small Abruzzo town

Hi everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Ateleta, a town located in the province of L'Aquila, in the beautiful region of Abruzzo. Ateleta is a small village with just over a thousand inhabitants, but despite its size, it offers a plethora of natural and cultural beauties.

Physical Geography

Ateleta is located a few kilometers from the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park, and lies on the territories of the left bank of the Sangro River, in the Upper Sangro basin. Its hilly location makes it one of the most scenic municipalities in the area, with a breathtaking view of the mountains surrounding the village. In fact, Monte Secine and Monte dell'Ellera are two of the favorite destinations for hikers and nature lovers.

Athlete: between nature and history in Abruzzo.

History

Ateleta's history dates back to a period not far from the year 1000, but its real demographic growth occurred in the eighteenth century, when some families from Pescocostanzo decided to move to this area due to the crisis in livestock farming. During the Napoleonic occupation, the municipality of Ateleta was established thanks to the pressure of Giuseppe de Thomasis, who appealed to Gioacchino Murat. Over the years, the population grew and reached its peak in the 1930s. However, poverty and the difficulties of rural life drove many to emigrate to other nations. Ateleta was also severely affected by World War II and the Gustav Line, which caused the destruction of much of the territory.

Symbols and Honors

The emblem of Ateleta consists of a modern French golden shield depicting an Oak tree and nine ears of wheat. The civic flag of the municipality is a blue banner.

Monuments and Places of Interest

One of the most important places of interest in Ateleta is certainly the parish church of San Gioacchino, built in the nineteenth century in memory of Gioacchino Murat. The historic building was destroyed during the war and subsequently rebuilt. The church has classical features, a rectangular shape, and a façade similar to a Greek temple with a portico of columns, a triangular pediment, and many mosaics at the entrance, with pseudo-classical friezes. The interior has a single nave and features square pillars and polychrome marbles.

There are not many other monuments or places of interest in Ateleta, but the beauty of the surrounding landscape and the tranquility of the village still make it an excellent destination for those seeking peace and nature.

Conclusions

In conclusion, if you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy the beauty of Abruzzo's nature, Ateleta could be the right place for you. Let yourself be conquered by the mountains surrounding the town, its millennia-old history, and the peace that reigns in the village. I assure you that you will not be disappointed!
