With a history dating back to the Bronze Age, Assolo has been inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by the numerous Nuraghe present in the territory. In the Middle Ages, the municipality belonged to the judgeship of Arborea and was part of the district of Parte Valenza. After the fall of the judgeship in 1410, Assolo passed under Aragonese domination, with the succession of various lords, until the abolition of the feudal system in 1839, when it became a municipality administered by a mayor and a city council.

The coat of arms, flag and banner of Assolo were granted by decree of the President of the Republic in 2015. The banner is a yellow drape with a blue border, while the flag is a yellow drape with a blue border, loaded with the municipal coat of arms.
