Castelnuovo

Castelnuovo: a medieval gem in Umbria

Castelnuovo is a hamlet in the municipality of Assisi, located in the province of Perugia. This small village is part of the region of Umbria, famous for its beauty and historical and cultural importance.

History

The history of Castelnuovo dates back to the time of Ancient Rome. Many inscriptions have been found along the "Petrosa" road, which once connected Assisi with a center near the present-day Collemancio. It is believed that the castle of Castelnuovo dates back to 1056, when it belonged to the holdings of the noble Lupo di Monaldo from the Duchy of Spoleto.

The Castello di Castelnuovo dates back to the 12th century and is mentioned for the first time in an official document of 1056. In 1425, there was a moat around it.
