Welcome to Assago

Hello everyone, today I will talk to you about Assago, a small town in the southwest of the metropolitan city of Milan in Lombardy.

Physical Geography

Exploring Assago: history, culture, and economy in Lombardy.

Territory

Assago borders directly with Milan and is crossed by important communication routes such as the A7 motorway and the A50 motorway. The city is bathed by the Naviglio Pavese and is located within the South Milan Agricultural Park. The area is characterized by a network of artificial canals that start from the Navigli of Milan or from the Resurgences present in the ground.

Climate

The climate of Assago is continental, with hot summers and cold winters. In winter, temperatures are around 3°C with frequent fog and frost, while in summer the average temperature is around 25°C with frequent thunderstorms.

Origins of the name

There are several hypotheses about the name of Assago: one theory suggests that the name derives from the Latin word "Assagum", which means agricultural land owned by a farmer named Assius. Another theory suggests that the suffix "agh" is typical of places near watercourses and that Assago derives from the combination of different names given by the populations that have inhabited the area.

History

Assago has ancient origins, as shown by the remains of a Roman villa from the 1st century found near the church of San Desiderio. In the Middle Ages, the city was included in the parish of Cesano Boscone and was used as a cemetery.

During the 18th century, the territory was measured and recorded on paper. Assago was then composed of four municipalities: Assago, Bazzana Sant'Ilario, Bazzanella with Monte Gaudio, and Pontirolo.

Modern Age

During the 19th century, Assago underwent significant transformations, mainly thanks to the construction of the Milan-Genoa railway and the beginning of gravel mining activities.

In the 1930s, the city saw the creation of important public works, such as the bridge over the Naviglio Pavese and the construction of the A7 motorway.

Economy

Assago has a strong agricultural economy, thanks to the presence of numerous farms specialized in the cultivation of cereals, fruits, and vegetables. In recent years, the city has seen growth in the tertiary sector, with significant investments in the fields of technology and culture.

Culture

Assago hosts numerous cultural events throughout the year, including the Culture Festival, which takes place in September. The city is also famous for the Mediolanum Forum, a multifunctional structure that hosts concerts, exhibitions, and sports events.

Conclusions

Assago is a dynamic and constantly evolving city, with a strong agricultural economy and great opportunities in the tertiary sector. The city has an important history, testified by the remains of the Roman villa and the transformations undergone over time. Assago is a place where culture and entertainment blend, with events and shows taking place throughout the year. I hope this overview has interested you and given you a good idea of what to expect if you decide to visit Assago.
