Ascrea is a rural municipality in the province of Rieti, located in the middle valley of the Turano River, in Lazio. This town stands out as a typical agricultural town of Sabina, famous for its seasonal product of porcini mushrooms. Ascrea is an outpost on the slopes of Monte Navegna, at an altitude of about 930 meters above sea level, overlooking the Obito gorge. The city extends over a rocky spur, separated by an Obito ditch from Monte Cervia.

History

Ascrea is a relatively young settlement compared to other nearby cities. It was probably founded between the 11th and 14th centuries, when the two surrounding cities of Bulgaretta and Mirandella were gradually abandoned. Ascrea was first mentioned in 1392 as the property of the Mareri family. In the course of the 16th century, it was contested by the Farnese, and then passed into the hands of the Soderini, to be enfeoffed in the family of Antonio Saverio Gentili in 1738.

Futsal

Ascreana is the local sports club and has brought the futsal team to the Serie C2 championship from Serie D. The team plays home games at the town sports facility.
