Torre A Castello

Welcome to Torre a Castello!

Hello everyone! Today we will talk about Torre a Castello, a beautiful hamlet of the municipality of Asciano, in the province of Siena, Tuscany.

History

Torre a Castello has medieval origins and was under the dominion of the counts of Berardenga and Scialenga. In 1175, it was placed under the protection of the Republic of Siena. In 1234, it suffered an attack and plundering by Florence, but later it was able to recover thanks to the Sienese victory in the battle of Montaperti. When the Republic of Siena assigned its own magistrate, Torre a Castello was able to establish itself as a municipality. In 1777, following the grand ducal regulation of local administrations, the community of Torre a Castello was merged with that of Asciano. In 1833, the hamlet had 247 inhabitants.

Monuments and places of interest

Among the most important monuments in Torre a Castello is the church of Santa Maria, which is in a state of semi-abandonment but was once a parish church inserted in the Pieve of Pieve di San Vito in Versuris. This church is mentioned in 1275. The presence of another church dedicated to San Salvatore is documented as early as 1318, but currently it has disappeared and is difficult to identify.

Some remains of the ancient fortress still exist, including some walls and the tower that gives the hamlet its name. These have been incorporated and transformed into two noble villas that were owned by the Piccolomini and Cinughi families.
