Arzergrande

Welcome to Arzergrande!

Hello everyone! Today I want to tell you something about Arzergrande, a small town in the province of Padova in Veneto. With a population of 4794 inhabitants, Arzergrande is a welcoming and hospitable place, perfect for some relaxation or for exploring the beauties of the region.

Origins of the name

The name Arzergrande comes from the presence of a levee on the Medoacus river (the Brenta). In fact, the provincial road No. 4 that crosses the town looks like an embankment raised above the surrounding areas. This gave the name to the small village, which later developed around the levee.

History

Ancient history

The history of Arzergrande and Vallonga (a district of the town) dates back to 1200 BC, when this territory was inhabited by the Enetoi-Eneti, the ancient Veneti. Their presence in the Saccisica territory is attested by findings of Venetian inscriptions, probably referring to the funeral context.

During the Roman domination, Arzergrande and Vallonga became important road and river junctions, thanks to the construction of major roads such as the Annia, Postumia and Popilia roads. The latter, in particular, connected Adria to Aquileia passing through Vallonga. In the 1st century AD, Vallonga became an important commercial center, where goods were sorted from the Popilia road to Padua.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Arzergrande and Vallonga underwent a slow decline in commerce and politics. In 452 AD, they were invaded by the Visigoths, Vandals and Huns.

Symbols

The municipal coat of arms and the banner of Arzergrande were granted by royal decree on March 11, 1937. The coat of arms features an image of the Roman eagle, holding arrows in its talons, a symbol of the power of Jupiter.

Society

Arzergrande has had an uneven demographic evolution. Currently, it has about 4800 inhabitants. The majority of the population is Catholic and the town has a church dedicated to Saint Rocco.

Administration

The mayor of Arzergrande is Filippo Lazzarin, elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2021. The town has a center-left political tradition, with many mayors belonging to the Christian Democratic Party in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. In 1995, the first mayor elected directly by the citizens was Valentino Coin, and the town has hosted several center-left and center-right administrations.

Twinning

Arzergrande is twinned with Dachau, a city in Germany. The twinning was established in 1995 and since 1996 there have been youth exchanges between the two cities.
