Arquà Polesine

Arquà Polesine: a historic municipality to discover

Arquà Polesine is a picturesque municipality of the province of Rovigo, located in the heart of the Veneto region, which can boast a long historical tradition. This charming place, inhabited by about 2602 people, is rich in historical buildings and monuments, such as the baroque-style parish church dedicated to St. Andrew, the medieval castle, the oratories, and the 14th-century Estense hunting lodge, which are just a few of the many places of interest that can be found in this municipality.

An ancient and rich history

The name "Arquà Polesine" was given because formerly a river or a road traced a dry curve here. Archaeologists have found numerous artifacts that testify to the existence of a settlement already in Roman times. The territory of Arquà seems to have been donated by the local feudatory, the Marquess Almerico, to the Church of Adria. In 938 it passed under the lordship of the Adelardi of Ferrara, from these it then passed to the Estensi in 1194, to whom it remained, except for brief periods, until 1482. These historical events have left a deep imprint on the culture and traditions of this municipality.

Each of these places possesses an architectural and artistic style of its own, but all are important examples of Italian religious art and architecture.

The Castle of Arquà Polesine is another particularly suggestive place of interest. Built in 1146 by Guglielmo III degli Adelardi Marcheselli, lord of Ferrara, the castle was used to defend against the Estensi who were trying to conquer the Ferrara territory and the Polesine. After the conquest of the castle by the Estensi troops, it was reconquered by the Venetian offensive following the bloody war of Ferrara of 1482-1484. Despite the historical events that have marked its history, the Castle of Arquà Polesine is still the most relevant and best-preserved medieval monument in the Polesine.
