Carnello
Carnello: A place with deep historical roots
Carnello is a charming urban center in southern Lazio, located on the border of the municipalities of Sora, Isola del Liri and Arpino, in the province of Frosinone. The city, which develops along the banks of the Fibreno river, has a glorious past. It was very dear to the famous orator Marcus Tullius Cicero, who was born and raised there under the shadow of its poplars.
Deep historical roots
According to the testimonies of the orator himself and other recent scholars, Carnello was where Cicero had the villa and the Amaltheum built. Later, the small village that formed along the banks of the Fibreno was called Carnello. In the Roman Martyrology, it is believed that the same river, now known as Carnello, was named after the Martyrs Saints. Also in the "Acts of Saint Placid Martyr", written by Gordian, we find the same river called Carnello. The aforementioned martyrs were the Roman virgin Restituta of Sora and Cirillo of Sorano, who were beheaded along the banks of the Fibreno in 275. In honor of the martyr, a little church was built on the site of the event. After some restoration work, the current form of the church Santa Restituta comes from the last works performed after the destruction of 1943-1944.
Industrialization of Carnello
Carnello has been an important industrial center since the times of Cicero. An example is the fullonica tower, known as the "Cicero tower", where the Tulli family owned the villa, farms and a fullonica. The woolen cloth industry, the mills and more recently paper and food pastes have made Carnello a place of great importance. The strategic position of the Fibreno river, which collected all the waters of the Pre-Apennines and had its period of low flow during the summer, when the Liri River reduced its flow, favored its industrialization. In the 19th century, after the events of the triumph of the French army, many adventurers and industrialists came from this country to exploit these production sites.
The passion for paper industry that has spanned centuries
The purchase of the paper mill by Carlo Lefebvre, an astute financier and successful industrialist, was one of the fundamental steps for the development of the production of paper and pastes in Carnello. The sector has had ups and downs, but has managed to cross centuries, thanks to the passion passed down from father to son. Even today, the town is an important place of production for paper and food, and is constantly evolving.
In summary, Carnello is a place with deep historical roots that has been able to renew itself and adapt to progress and industrial development. A city with a great tradition, that continues to look to the future with hope and passion, through the work and determination of its inhabitants.
