Physical Geography

Territory

One of the most interesting geographical features of Arnara is that it develops on the low hills of the Valle del Sacco, the last extensions of the Ernici mountains. In this city, two streams can also be found: the Fosso d'Arnara (a small river tributary from the left of the Sacco) and the Fosso Meringo, also a small tributary of the Sacco on the left.

Climate

Regarding the climate, Arnara enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers and mild and humid winters.

History

To discover the origin of the name of Arnara, we must refer to the tuff quarries on which the first settlement nucleus arose. The etymology of the name may derive from the noun "harena," which identified the sand present in the quarries. According to some studies, instead, the name would derive from the Lombard "Arnhari," Latinized into Arnarius, from which the name Arnara. It is probable, however, that the name comes from the word "Arnaro," which means "closed place" such as; a cave or an earth quarry.

It is not easy to date the original nucleus of Arnara, but thanks to the discoveries of small Roman communities in the area and the proximity of the Casilina road (the ancient Latin road), it seems that it must be traced back to the late Republican age. The real urban nucleus appears to date back to the arrival of the Lombards in the area, around the middle of the eighth century.

The first fortification of the settlement may have been attributed to 756 with the construction of the Tower. Despite the Castle of Arnara having an older origin (perhaps Lombard), the first news relating to the Village dates back to 1121 when the fiefdom belonging to the county of Ceccano was besieged by the troops of Pope Callistus II and the Normans.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Arnara is a truly enchanting place that invites you to discover its history and admire its natural landscapes. If you haven't yet chosen where to spend your next vacation, don't hesitate to choose Arnara as your destination: You won't regret it!
