If you're looking for a tourist destination in the province of Chieti, then you must visit Arielli! This town of 1063 inhabitants is located in a panoramic position on the hill that overlooks the river of the same name, and is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. In this article, we will tell you about the history of the town, the historic buildings to visit, and its symbols.

Arielli's history

The first historical documents relating to Arielli date back to the 12th century when the town was in the feudal period. The construction of the castle, which dominated the town and surrounding countryside, dates back to the 800s or 1000s, although it's not clear who built it. The first known owner of the castle was Count Boemondo of Tarsia di Manoppello in 1145. In 1528, ownership of the fiefdom of Arielli became the property of Luca Andrea Arcuzio Resio, who restored and strengthened it in 1561. Unfortunately, the castle collapsed in 1904 and was removed to create Piazza Crognali. In the Sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie, there is a beautiful polychrome wooden statue depicting the Madonna and child, along with the remains of the medieval castle.

Monuments and Places of Interest

If you want to discover the historical beauties of Arielli, these are the monuments and places of interest that you must visit.

The remains of the castle

Walking through Piazza Crognali, you can admire the remains of a bastion that was part of the medieval castle. In this area, you will find a civil building with a civic tower, a clock, and bells that house some municipal offices and the sacristy of the church of San Michele Archangel. The castle, belonging to the feudal lords Crognale of Castel Frentano, was located in the town center and also had a watchtower. Unfortunately, in the early 1900s, it partly collapsed due to neglect and was demolished.

The Church of Madonna delle Grazie

The church, built in the 16th century and then rebuilt at the end of the 19th century, is located on Corso Savoia. The main facade features a portal with two pillars on either side, above which there is a small cornice with two truncated arches. Above that, there is a rectangular window with a tympanum above it that features a small circular window in the shape of an porthole. Inside, you will find beautiful sacred furnishings in Baroque and Rococo styles.

The Church of San Rocco and San Michele

The Church of San Rocco and San Michele, dating back to the 13th century, is the oldest religious building in Arielli. The church suffered serious damage during the bombings of World War II and was rebuilt after the war. In addition, you can admire the stone altar and the valuable frescoes of the apse.
