In the 6th century, the territory was donated by the Byzantine Empire to the Bishop of Ravenna Agnello and the city assumed an important role as a link between the Ferrara and Ravenna territories.
Over the centuries, Argenta was the subject of numerous disputes between the Ravenna bishopric and the Este lordship. In 1200, the city was attacked by an army composed of Ferrara soldiers and Modena and Verona mercenaries, who devastated and set it on fire. However, Argenta managed to maintain its independence and remained culturally linked to both territories.
During the Middle Ages, Argenta was a feudo of the Giocoli family and a convention was held there that brought together all the Guelph and Ghibelline leaders of Romagna in 1295. In 1333, the city was ceded to the Este and became part of their lordship. Over the following centuries, Argenta underwent several vicissitudes, including the invasion of the Hungarians in 1474 and the destruction of the historic center during World War II.
