Arenzano

Welcome to Arenzano, between mountains and sea

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Arenzano, an incredible Italian town located on the coast of the Riviera di Ponente, in the Liguria region. With its 11,093 inhabitants, it is a small but charming metropolitan city of Genoa.

Between mountains and sea

The territory of Arenzano is characterized by the presence of mountains and sea, making it the ideal place for nature lovers and outdoor sports. The municipality is completely immersed in the Beigua Regional Nature Park, which includes two thirds of the territory. Most of the land is mountainous, with the highest peak reaching 1,183 meters above sea level.

The particular morphology of the territory creates a splendid view, with some mountainous areas that overlook the coastal stretch, reaching a minimum distance of only 5.7 kilometers between the sea and the Ligurian Apennine ridge.

Arenzano: between sea and mountains, history and nature.

Rivers and streams

The main waterways of Arenzano are the Lerone stream, which separates the municipality of Arenzano from that of Cogoleto, and the Cantarena and Lissolo streams.

The history of Arenzano

From the origins to the Roman era

According to historical sources, Arenzano was founded in Roman times and the toponym of the municipality, ''Arentianis'', could derive from the name of the property or possession of the Ligurian family that inhabited the area. However, there are other interpretations that suggest that the name may derive from "ara Jani" (meaning "altar of Janus") or "arx Jani" ("Janus' fortress").

There are also some theories that suggest that the name may derive from the Celtic words ''halen'' ("sea") and ''sine'' ("point"), which together mean "promontory on the sea".

Subsequent events and settlements

During the Roman era, Arenzano was connected to other cities in the area through a mule track about 2 meters wide. Over time, the village was also known under the name of "Hasta", which on the Tabula Peutingeriana of the third century, was identified as the city center present in that area.

Subsequently, the village of Arenzano passed under the control of the Byzantines, then the Lombards, and finally the Genoese, who administered it for about 600 years.
