Arcola, between history, nature and flavors: discovering a Ligurian town.

Origins of the name

The name of the municipality has several hypotheses on etymology, but the most likely is that it derives from the term "rocca" or "little fortress". However, some sources also link it to Hercules as the founder of the place, while more recent hypotheses relate the dialect term "incò" or "promontory".

History

The history of Àrcola dates back to ancient Rome, when the village became a transit depot in the advance of the Roman Empire against the Ligurian peoples. Over the centuries, the village was involved in various events that affected the Val di Magra and the Lunigiana region. In particular, the village was an important feudal center of the Obertenghi in the XI century and was looted by the Normans and the Saracens in the Middle Ages.

In the XIII century, the village was at the center of various attempts to dominate the Malaspina family and later passed under the control of the Republic of Genoa. In the XV century, agricultural activities and the cultivation of legumes, cereals, grapes, fruits, vegetables, and fodder were already quite developed, despite the frequent flooding.
