Others believe that the name derives from ''Arx Isarcorum'', fortress of the Isarci, or as ''Arx Isaurorum'', fortress of the Isauri. But there are also several Roman interpretations of the toponym, such as ''Ara Cæsaris'' or ''Arcesius'' (Greek Ἀρκείσιος) which was one of the names of the god Mercury. The economy of the town, in fact, was based on the production of lime.

History of Arcisate

The history of the town dates back to prehistoric times, when Arcisate was an important transit center for access to the Alps and the San Gottardo pass. Romanization was intense and occurred around the 3rd-2nd century BC. In the 5th century, the Christian presence was already rooted in the area. The religious reality of the town is attested by the two inscriptions that the provost Pietro Antonio Alemagna found during the restoration work of the main altar of the basilica of San Vittore. The 5th century inscriptions reported the names of two important characters from the area, shortly after the fall of the Roman Empire.
