Arcevia
A description of Arcevia and its history
Arcevia is a municipality located in the province of Ancona, in the Marche region, with a population of about 4,230 inhabitants. The municipality's territory extends from the Marche hills to the low reliefs of the Umbrian-Marche Apennines. The city borders the mountains of "Gola della Rossa". Its territory is partly covered by fields and hills characteristic of the "Marche countryside".
The ancient history of the city
Rocca Contrada is the historic name of Arcevia. There are documents from 1065 and 1130 that attest to the existence of a fortified settlement located on top of Sasso Cischiano. The city was probably founded during the barbarian invasions. During the Lombard Kingdom, Arcevia probably served as a military outpost. The city was occupied by the Franks and donated to Pope Stephen II in 754. During World War II, the city of Arcevia was awarded the bronze medal for military valor for the sacrifices of its population and for its activity in the partisan struggle.
The origin of the name
The city of Rocca Contrada was officially named Arcevia with the title of city with the apostolic letter of September 16, 1817 by Pope Pius VII. The name derives from the Latin terms "arces" and "via", meaning "fortified place".
The city today
Arcevia is a small city, but has many attractions, including the church of San Medardo, the only example of Romanesque architecture throughout the city. The city is known for its architectural and artistic heritage, dating back to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Among the most important places of interest are the Palazzo Comunale, the Loggia dei Mercanti, the Teatro La Fenice, the Church of San Francesco and the Church of San Giovanni Battista.
Arcevia is also famous for its local products, including extra virgin olive oil and wine. The city hosts numerous cultural events and festivals, including the Medieval Festival, the Antique Music Festival, the Truffle Fair and the Polenta Festival.
In summary, Arcevia is a small and charming city in the province of Ancona, located between the Marche hills and the Umbrian-Marche Apennines. The city has a rich medieval and Renaissance history and an architectural and artistic heritage, to which must be added the appreciation for the variety of local cultural activities and traditions.
