The geographical location of Antrodoco
Antrodoco is situated along the SS4 Via Salaria and is easily accessible by car and train. The city is located in the center of three mountain ranges that offer a unique landscape, and the beautiful Valley of Corno, where the ancient Castle stood, is incredibly suggestive. The valley is part of the SS17 Appennino Abruzzese ed Appulo Sannitico, which connects Lazio to Abruzzo, Molise and Puglia. In total, there are 13 km of road within Antrodoco that lead to the Sella di Corno pass.
The mountains surrounding Antrodoco
The mountains surrounding Antrodoco offer splendid views and are ideal for hiking and trekking. Mount Giano, to the northeast, is 1820 m high and on the summit there is a writing made up of pine trees that depicts the word "duce". The pine forest was created as a tribute to Benito Mussolini by the School of Forestry Guards of Cittaducale in 1939 with the help of many local young people. Although the writing was destroyed by a fire in 2017, it has been partially restored thanks to 200 volunteers who planted 1000 pines on the mountain.
To the south of Antrodoco there is Mount Nuria, 1888 m high, which takes its name from a valley in the Pyrenees or from the Arabic term for "light". To the north, instead, the Valle del Velino is dominated by Mount Elefante, 2089 m high, which is part of the Monte Terminillo massif and which the ancient Romans called "Mons Tetricus". To the west, the valley widens forming the Piana di San Vittorino after passing through Borgo Velino.
The Velino River
Antrodoco is crossed by the Velino River, the main tributary of the Nera River and an important watercourse in the region that the ancient Romans called "Avens Flumen". The river passes at the entrance to the Gole del Velino, an enchanting canyon that offers unique landscapes.
