In 1563 it became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy. In the 19th century, Turin became the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861-1946.

Turin has hosted important international events. In 1911, it hosted the Turin International Exhibition, and in 2006, the XX Winter Olympic Games. Since 2021, Turin has been selected as the host of the ATP Finals until at least 2025. In 2022, the city hosted the Eurovision Song Contest.
