Hello everybody! Today I want to talk to you about Angera, an Italian municipality in the province of Varese in Lombardy, overlooking the southeastern shore of Lake Maggiore. With its 5,407 inhabitants, Angera is a jewel of the Lombardy Region and has witnessed multiple historical epochs.
Origins of the name
The origin of the name Angera is uncertain, but it is thought to derive from "in glarea" or "on gravel", as the town stands near the lake shore. Alternatively, it could have Latin origins, from "Angularia", meaning in an extended sense, "a corner of land eroded by river currents".
History
Human presence in Angera dates back to the Upper Paleolithic period, and numerous artifacts have been found in the Grotta di Angera and in the area of the current cemetery. In the 2nd century BC, there was a diffusion of Roman artifacts, testifying to the area's Romanisation, and the village experienced strong commercial development thanks to the lake port for exchanging goods transported by water along the Po, Ticino, and Verbano, as well as products transported by land. In the Middle Ages, Angera was under the rule of the Visconti and the Sforza, and their influence is still visible today in the Rocca di Angera.
The Rocca di Angera
The Rocca di Angera is the symbol of the town and dates back to the Middle Ages. Used as a residence by the Visconti and the Sforza, it was renovated in the 19th century by the Borromeo family and is now an important tourist destination. Inside the Rocca, visitors can admire frescoes, chapels, historical rooms, and a lapidary, which houses Roman tombstones and inscriptions. Furthermore, from the Rocca's terrace, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the lake.
The Doll and Toy Museum
Another attraction in Angera is the Doll and Toy Museum, which collects about 1000 ancient dolls and toys from all over the world. Since 1988, this museum has been a favorite destination for both adults and children, who can admire the beauty and originality of these creations.
