Andorno Micca

Welcome to Andorno Micca: a small Piedmontese town

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Andorno Micca, a small town with 3027 inhabitants in the province of Biella, in Piedmont.

Let's discover the geography of Andorno Micca

Andorno Micca is located about six kilometers from the capital, Biella, and extends around the ancient nucleus of Andorno Cacciorna, on the left side of the Bassa Valle Cervo. The Cervo Valley takes its name from the Cervo river, which runs through the area. The town is located in an alluvial plain at the foot of the Biella Prealps. The area is characterized by very low seismicity and is therefore in zone 4.

In the past, the territory extended to the Lys Valley and Valsesia and was crossed by an ancient Roman road that crossed the Aosta Valley and reached into Gaul.

The history of Andorno Micca

Andorno Micca has an ancient history that can also be traced back to the Roman era. The city takes its name from Pietro Micca, hero of the Siege of Turin, although this title is also contested by the nearby Sagliano Micca.

In the Middle Ages, the name of Andorno appeared as 'Andurnum' or 'Andornum' in a donation act of 29 January 963, when the corticula was donated by Emperor Otto I of Saxony to Count Aimone of Cavaglià.

In the Renaissance, the spirits of the Andornese citizens were exacerbated towards Bishop Giovanni Fieschi. The inhabitants, tired of his demands, attacked the castle on a hill and imprisoned the bishop, stealing his goods.

In 1378, Bishop Ibleto Fieschi granted the fiefdom for 4,000 ducats to Count Federico di Challant, and convinced the Andornese to submit to the Savoys. In 1379, Count Amedeo VI of Savoy became the owner of the castle and entrusted it to Giovanni Duco di Moncalieri.
