Origins of the name

The history of the name Andora is shrouded in myth and legend. According to popular legend, Andalora was the name of a very beautiful girl who was captured by a Saracen prince named Al Kadir while he was raiding the Ligurian coast. Her lover Stefanello tried to free her at night, but was discovered and killed. Due to the intense pain and the loss of her beloved, Andalora threw herself into the sea. Legend has it that the sacrifice of the lovers led Prince Al Kadir to convert to Christianity and that the two neighboring towns of Andora and Stellanello were named in memory of the two young people.

History

The history of Andora dates back to Roman times, when the territory known as "castrum Andoræ" was a possession of the Roman Empire. During the Middle Ages, the inhabitants of Andora built their village around a fortified castle erected by the Marquises of Clavesana. In 1252, Andora was purchased by the Republic of Genoa and became one of the city's main insignia. During the fifteenth century, it suffered destruction and damage at the hands of the Visconti of the Duchy of Milan. However, the city played a leading role as an economic and social center of the area, continuing its development in the following centuries.

Events

Andora offers a wide range of events and festivals throughout the year. The celebrations of Saint John the Baptist (patron saint of the city) are among the main ones, held around June 24 and featuring music, food and stunning fireworks. The Carnival is also a very fun occasion, with numerous parades of masks. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy the "Superenduro MTB" event, an extreme mountain biking race held in May.
