Hello friends,

Today I would like to talk to you about Turin, a city that has so much to offer. Turin is an Italian municipality located in the Piedmont region and has a population of 842,472 inhabitants as of October 31, 2022. It is the fourth largest municipality in Italy by population and is the heart of a Turin metropolitan area of about 1.7 million inhabitants.

The history of Turin

Turin has a two-millennia history, founded by the Taurini around the 3rd century BC, and then transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus with the name 'Iulia Augusta Taurinorum' in the 1st century BC. After the Ostrogothic domination, it became the capital of an important Duchy of Turin, then passed under the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy in the 11th century. In 1563, it became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy. Turin was then the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia from 1720 to 1861, when it formally became the first capital city of the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946) (from 1861 to 1865).

Economy and Culture

Turin is one of the major university, cultural, tourist, artistic and scientific hubs in Italy. It is the third most important economy-industry production complex in the country, and has always been part of the Italian industrial triangle together with Milan and Genoa. It's the hub of the Italian automotive industry, as well as an important publishing, banking and insurance, information technology, film, food and wine, space, industrial design, sports, fashion and artificial intelligence center.

Turin: History, Culture and Economy

The Territory of Turin

Turin is located in the plain delimited by the Stura di Lanzo, Sangone and Po rivers. The Po River runs through the city from south to north, in front of the outlet of some alpine valleys such as Val di Susa, which connects the city with nearby France through the Frejus tunnels, and the Lanzo and Sangone Valleys. The territory of Turin is characterized by a continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters.

Art and Culture

In the territory of Turin, there are areas and buildings included in two UNESCO protected sites: some palaces and areas that are part of the Savoy Residences in Piedmont heritage (world heritage) and the Po Hills area (biosphere reserve). Turin is also known for its artistic heritage, including the famous chapel of the Holy Shroud and the Royal Palace, home of the Queen Mother. In addition, Turin has important museums such as the Egyptian Museum, Pinacoteca Agnelli and the GAM - Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art.

Events and Sports

Turin also has a great football tradition: the two main football teams in the city are Torino FC, one of the historic teams of Italian football, and Juventus, one of the most successful teams in Serie A and Europe. The city has hosted numerous sporting events, including the XX Winter Olympic Games in 2006, the ATP Finals since 2021 and the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. Moreover, Turin is famous for being the birthplace of some of the major symbols of "Made in Italy" in the world, such as Vermouth, Gianduiotto and Espresso coffee.

In conclusion, if you haven't had the opportunity to visit Turin yet, I highly recommend doing so. A city with such an important history, a strong economy, and such a vast cultural heritage definitely deserves to be discovered and appreciated.

See you soon!
