Hello everyone! Today I would like to talk to you about Amorosi, a beautiful Italian municipality located in the province of Benevento, in Campania.

With its 5,000 inhabitants, this charming city is characterized by its location on a plain, extending in the shape of a cross on the banks of the Volturno and Calore Irpino rivers. The municipal territory extends at an altitude ranging from 34 to 85 meters above sea level, with an altimetric variation of almost 51 meters.

The history of Amorosi

The history of Amorosi dates back to the late Middle Ages. The city was probably founded by some survivors of Telesia, a city destroyed by the earthquake of 1349 that made the air rarefied and unhealthy due to the release of sulfur vapors.

The origin of the name is not very clear, but it is thought to derive from a Lombardic nobleman called Amoroso. During the Middle Ages, the city was known as ''Amerusii'', as reported in documents of the time.

Throughout its history, Amorosi passed through various properties, including the Gaetani and Colonna families, before becoming the property of the Caracciolo family in 1672. The city was damaged by the earthquake of June 5, 1688, but lived a moment of importance in 1734, when Charles III of Spain stayed there.

In 1772, the city was purchased by the Piscitelli family of Cerreto Sannita and in 1852, Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies visited it to build a bridge over the Calore Irpino river. Amorosi was also involved in World War II, when it was bombed by the Americans on September 29, 1943. During the war, the city also hosted a contingent of English engineers and an Italian battalion.
