Ameno: a sustainable village on Lake Orta

An Ancient History

Archaeological research conducted in Lortallo has uncovered one of the most important necropolises from the beginning of the first Iron Age. The collection of tombs dates back from the 9th to the 5th century BCE and the finds are part of the Golasecca Culture. The territory of Ameno is also rich in evidence of ancient settlement. The geographic location was strategic and allowed for the control of the lake crossings and the Agogna valley. In Roman times, the road between Novara and Ossola was reinforced with the construction of a road that is still visible today.

The Oldest Finds

In 1992, during the installation of a fence, a significant quantity of bronze age pottery was found in the Borgo del Magnano area, not far from the Ameno cemetery. Walter Baronchelli, a local resident, reported the discovery and the material was then preserved at the Ameno Municipality.

Sustainable Village of Piedmont

On September 26, 2012, Ameno was awarded the Green Flag and the mark "Sustainable Village of Piedmont - Location for more responsible tourism". This award is given to local communities that have distinguished themselves for their environmental best practices. Ameno was chosen for this award thanks to its policies of sustainable environmental practices and responsible tourism.

Twinned with France

In 2007, Ameno twinned with the French commune of Commelle-Vernay. The twinning aimed to consolidate cooperation between the two countries and strengthen the promotion of tourism in the area.

Events and Festivals

Every year on January 6, the Procession of the chapels is celebrated. The event starts in Piazza del Municipio and continues through the streets of the city center, where visitors can admire the chapels created by the locals and taste local culinary specialties.

Furthermore, every year during the month of July, the "Art under the Stars" event takes place, an opportunity for local artists to exhibit their works in a suggestive setting.

Conclusion

In summary, Ameno is a picturesque place that boasts an ancient history and a breathtaking view of Lake Orta. This sustainable village is an ideal place for those seeking a relaxing and eco-friendly vacation. Thanks to its events and festivals, Ameno always offers something new and interesting to experience. Do not hesitate to visit Ameno during your next holiday in Italy!
