The scenery of Amaseno is impressive. It is located in the valley of the Amaseno, surrounded by the Ausoni mountains to the east-south-west and the Lepini mountains to the north. The mountains are covered with limestone rocks, while the slopes are covered with vegetation. The territory is mainly composed of Turonian fossils and is fertile enough for any cultivation. The main river is the Amaseno, which flows in the valley before joining the Ufente and the Portatore. The river was also mentioned by Virgil in the Aeneid with the vocative "Amasene pater" and "Amasenus abundans".

Climate

The history of Amaseno

Amaseno does not have ancient origins and there are no testimonies of a settlement prior to the medieval period. It is supposed that the village was born around a monastery in the 9th century or that it was formed around a military fortification. The first written attestation of the existence of Amaseno dates back to 1125, when the village was still called "Castrum Sancti Laurentii". In 1872, the name was changed to Amaseno, as the village was located near the Amaseno river.

The fortified complex of Amaseno was named "Castello di Maenza" due to the historical connection with the Castle of Maenza, which was the summer residence of the Counts of Ceccano. The village was destroyed and rebuilt several times due to wars and fires. In 1297, the village briefly passed to the Caetani, but soon returned to the hands of the Counts of Ceccano who fortified it.

The origin of the name Amaseno

The name "Amaseno" derives from a small river called "Amasenus". It is hypothesized that the name could derive from a city called "Amasos". In a much earlier period, the village was called Castrum Sancti Laurentii.
