But Amantea is not just sea: there is a mountainous part of the territory where you can take beautiful walks through uncontaminated nature.
Rivers and streams that cross Amantea
Like every territory in Calabria, Amantea is crossed by several rivers and streams. All waterways have a torrential nature, so they can be very dangerous during heavy rains. Starting from the north and heading south along the Tyrrhenian state road, you will come across:
- The "Catocastro", a watercourse that originates from Mount Cocuzzo and crosses the municipality of Lago;
- The "Torrente Santa Maria", which crosses the lower part of the city delimiting the Lungomare;
- The "Torrente Calcato" and the "Torrente Colongi";
- The "Oliva" which originates on the Costiera Chain near Potame and flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea in the homonymous fraction just north of Campora San Giovanni.
The places to visit in Amantea
During your visit to Amantea, you cannot miss at least three main places. The first is the Castle of Amantea, located in the historic center of the city. It dates back to the 9th century and was built to defend the city from Saracen invasions. Particularly striking is the panoramic view of both the sea and the mountains that can be admired from the castle square.
Another place not to be missed is the Church of San Bernardino, located in the lower part of the city. The church, built between 1610 and 1623, contains valuable works of art such as the statues of the Dead Christ and the Sorrowful Madonna.
