Discovering Amandola: a small town in the Marche hills

If you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature, Amandola could be the right choice for you. This small town, located in the province of Fermo in the Marche region, has only 3401 inhabitants, but it offers breathtaking landscapes and an ancient history dating back to Roman times.

Physical Geography: between mountains and valleys

Amandola is located on three hills, Castel Leone, Agello and Marrubbione, in the high valley of the river Tenna. The highest point, Castel Leone, reaches a height of about 550 meters above sea level and is inhabited. The city is crossed by the Bora stream on the right and the Tenna river on the left, separating it from the industrial area. To the west, the territory is closed by the Sibillini Mountains range, where the Castelmanardo mountain reaches a height of 1917 meters above sea level. To the east, instead, the Tenna valley extends to the shores of Lake San Ruffino, while to the north and south there are wooded hills and valleys.

History: from ancient times to the early Middle Ages

Archaeological findings in recent years have shown that Amandola and its surroundings were already inhabited since ancient times, in particular by the Piceni and the Romans after their victory in the Picentine War of 267 BC. It was believed that the ancient Interamnia Poletina was identifiable with the nearby Comunanza, but research has shown that it was located in the current municipal territory of Amandola. After the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, the area was invaded by the Ostrogoths, then reconquered by the Byzantines, and finally occupied by the Lombards since 568.
