Almenno San Salvatore

The beautiful story of Almenno San Salvatore

Almenno San Salvatore is a municipality located in the province of Bergamo in Lombardy, with a population of approximately 5,573 inhabitants. The name of the municipality derives from the word "Lemine", the meaning of which is not very clear. The area of Almenno S.S. has been inhabited since Roman times and the administrative center was located in the area of the Castle, near the Queen's Bridge over the Lemine River.

The history of Almenno San Salvatore

The Almenno territory has seen various changes and passages of civilizations, from the Celts to the Cenomani Gauls and the Roman Civilization. After the fall of the Lombard kingdom, the territory of the "Feudal Court" was part of the county of Lecco until the eleventh century, when it passed under the bishopric of Bergamo.

The battles between the Guelfs and Ghibellines affected the Almenno community in 1393, leading to the division of the municipality between the Guelf Lemine Superiore and the Ghibelline Lemine Inferiore, which was destroyed in 1443 by the Podesta of Bergamo.

The birth of two Almenno

The Lemine Superiore survived the battles between Guelfs and Ghibellines, became a very large community and led to the birth of a new parish, that of San Bartolomeo, which led to the final splitting of Almenno on March 30, 1601 into two municipalities: Almenno San Bartolomeo and Almenno San Salvatore.
