The History of the Lake

The birth of Lake Alleghe was the result of a tragedy. In 1771, a landslide destroyed the village of Riete, causing the death of 49 people. The obstruction of the valley caused by the debris of the landslide blocked the natural flow of the Cordevole waters, and the lake was born. The process of creating the lake was immediate, and the waters of the reservoir that was forming submerged in a few weeks numerous villages. The situation seemed irrecoverable, and the efforts to contain the lake were unsuccessful, even though the engineers of the Republic of Venice tried to remedy the situation. In May of the same year, another seismic event occurred caused by the torrential rains of the season. Although less violent than the previous one, it still caused further damage.
