Alimena

Welcome to Alimena

Hello everyone! Today I want to tell you about Alimena, a small town of 1764 inhabitants located in the mountainous region of Madonie, in the metropolitan city of Palermo in Sicily.

Characteristics

Alimena is a charming village nestled in the watershed of the Salso river and its southern tributary Imera, at the foot of Balza d'Areddula (1007 meters above sea level). Its strategic location makes it a must-visit for those who want to reach the Madonie municipalities of Bompietro, Blufi, Petralia Soprana, Geraci Siculo and Gangi. Moreover, thanks to the Resuttano exit on the A19 Palermo-Catania highway (7.6 km from the highway junction), it is easily accessible by car from Palermo, Catania and Caltanissetta in no time.

Monuments and places of interest

Let's move on to the most interesting things: the monuments and places of interest in Alimena. Here there are some historic buildings that are worth a visit if you are in the area. The Mother Church dedicated to the patron saint Mary Magdalene, erected by the prince of Belvedere Vincenzo Del Bosco from 1725 to 1731, can be considered the heart of the city. Its grandiose architecture with three naves houses the valuable statue of the Immaculate of Sorge. The former convent of Santa Maria di Gesù, defined by Saint-Non who stayed there "one of the most beautiful in Sicily," was erected by the Prince of Belvedere Vincenzo Del Bosco and his wife Donna Dorotea Benso Alimena between 1731 and 1738. Today only the church remains, but its façade is similar to that of the Mother Church. Balza Areddula, an archaeological site at 1007 meters above sea level, offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscapes. The Church of Sant'Alfonso dei Liguori, located on Colle Quisisana at just over 800 meters above sea level, is a symbol of the city and offers a spectacular panoramic view. Finally, the former College of Mary with the adjoining church dedicated to Our Lady of Help, built in 1766 and used as an orphanage, is another cultural heritage site of Alimena.

Economy and productions

Alimena is an agricultural center known for the production of cereals, with a special mention for wheat. Here there are three seed factories and a nougat factory that produce some of the best products in the area. In short, if you are passionate about gastronomy, you must come here and taste the local delicacies!

Conclusions

In conclusion, Alimena is a hidden gem in the heart of the Madonie, with a cultural and landscape heritage that is worth discovering. Whether you are a history buff, a foodie or a nature lover, this town will offer you an unforgettable experience. We look forward to welcoming you here!
