Longastrino
Longastrino: a village divided between two provinces
Hello everyone! Today I'll talk about Longastrino, a hamlet of 1,930 inhabitants located between the municipalities of Argenta and Alfonsine, respectively in the province of Ferrara and in the province of Ravenna. Yes, you got it right: Longastrino is divided between two provinces and two different municipalities!
The origin of the name
The name of the village is closely related to its geographical location, in a low plain near the valleys of Comacchio. According to a common interpretation, "Longastrino" could derive from "along the strine", that is, the strips of land that emerged from the valley. Another possibility is that the name may indicate a location positioned between the "high road" and the "low road", that is, the ancient embankments of the Po di Primaro.
The history of Longastrino
One of the oldest documents that mentions Longastrino dates back to May 9th, 1082, while a document of September 25th, 1022 refers to the concession of a strip of land not far from the church of S. Maria in Filo. As evidence of the remote presence of man in the territory, remains of Neolithic, pile-dwelling and Etruscan settlements have been found, attributable to the ancient city of Spina.
Historically, the settlement of Longastrino expanded around the church of San Giuliano, built in the sixteenth century but destroyed during the allied bombing in April 1945. It is only after the Second World War, however, that the territory underwent changes that determined its current configuration, namely a long strip of houses along the two sides of the main road.
The peculiarity of Longastrino
But let's get to the peculiarity of the village: its geographical and political location. Longastrino is in fact divided between the municipalities of Alfonsine and Argenta and between the provinces of Ravenna and Ferrara. It's a bit like the village has a dual identity!
