Lobbi
Discovering the town of Lobbi
Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Lobbi, a hamlet of the municipality of Alessandria located in the beautiful region of Piedmont. If you have never had the chance to visit this area, I advise you to do it as soon as possible, because I assure you it is worth it!
Geographical location
Lobbi is located east of Alessandria, on the right bank of the Tanaro river, surrounded by nature. This beautiful village is situated at an altitude of 90 meters above sea level and is only 11.27 km from the center of Alessandria. Lobbi includes the town center with its parish church, the hamlets of Cascinali Pagella, Zerba, Filippona, Cascina Stampa and the Fonte area. Once you arrive here, you can walk along the main streets such as Via Poggio, Via Sabatini, Via Passalacqua, Via Campora, Via Sale, Via Della Repubblica, Via Franchini, Via Guazzone and Via Pagella, to reach the two squares dedicated to A. Caretta and A. Franzini. The latter is located in the center of the village, in front of the parish church, and consists of a tree-lined area for children's games.
History
Lobbi has a long and fascinating history. From what we know, before 1550, this land was a simple collection of scattered farms. In 1175, however, Lobbi was part of the district of Alessandria, when the city was founded. In 1316, the area came under the rule of the Visconti, who governed the area for about 100 years, before being replaced by the Sforza. In 1647, Lobbi and Castelceriolo were flooded by the waters of the Tanaro during what was considered the worst flood in the area since the foundation of Alessandria. In 1734, Lobbi became a fiefdom of Count Stortiglioni. In 1854, the population suffered a loss due to cholera. During the period of the Italian Resistance, a brigade of the Marengo division was based in Lobbi.
Toponym
The name Lobbi has several interpretations, but one of the most plausible derives from the German word "Laub", which means wooded place. It is believed that the name Lobbi comes from a forest in that location called "laubiera", which still exists in the archives of Aix since 1025. Since the area where Lobbi was founded was once wooded, this may have given rise to the name of the village. The hamlet of Filippona, on the other hand, derives its name from Filippo Sforza, who loved to hunt in the large forest present here. After his death, the population decided to name it after him.
Society
Lobbi has had ups and downs in its demographic history. According to a census in 1855, the population was 1740 inhabitants, while in those of 1869 and 1901 the inhabitants were more than 2000. In 1911, however, there was a decrease in the population to 1660 inhabitants, and from that moment on the decrease has been constant until today.
In summary, Lobbi is a beautiful Piedmontese village that I recommend you to visit at least once in your life. Here nature, history, and culture blend perfectly!
