Aldeno

Welcome to Aldeno!

Hello everyone, today we will talk about Aldeno, a small town in the province of Trento. This place is perfect for those seeking some tranquility but at the same time want to be close to the city. But let's find out more about this beautiful location!

The History of Aldeno

The antiquity of this place is attested by numerous archaeological finds dating back to the Bronze Age and the Roman era. It is interesting to note that the important Roman road, Via Claudia Augusta, passed right through here, connecting the Alps with northern Italy.

But how did Aldeno get its name? There are different theories: according to some scholars, it derives from the Latin "Altinum", while for others, it comes from the Lombard "Aldio". Others believe it might derive from the Etruscan "Altena" or "Altuno". In the XIII century, the name of the town became "Aldenum", which then became the official name.

What is really interesting about Aldeno's history is its membership in the "Comun Comunale", an ancient administrative institution that functioned in Vallagarina from 1100 until 1818. This institution aimed to manage the uncultivated lands and forests of associated municipalities and regulated its activity through statutes and public assemblies.

Aldeno During the War

During World War I, Aldeno became the headquarters of the Austro-Hungarian XXI Corps, commanded by General Kasimir von Lütgendorf. The administrative and judicial offices of Rovereto were also transferred here. Many refugees, evacuated from the Leno, Lizzana, and Marco valleys, also found refuge in Aldeno, which had been caught in the line of fire. It was here that the Italian Irredentists Damiano Chiesa, Cesare Battisti, and Fabio Filzi passed, having been captured in different actions by the Imperial and Royal army and subsequently sentenced to death by a military court in Trento.

Sadly, Aldeno also experienced the dark side of war: at the end of World War II, it became the scene of violent clashes between the partisans of "Pasubiana" and the retreating Nazi units, which caused several casualties.

Symbols of Aldeno

The current municipal coat of arms of Aldeno is divided into two parts: on the left side, a Morus tree with roots on a gold background is depicted, while on the right side, on a blue background, a broken column is depicted in the foreground, and two arches are depicted in the background. The external ornaments of the coat of arms are fronds: on the right, a laurel frond, and on the left, an oak frond. The fronds are tied together by a golden knot and support a silver and red cartouche bearing the inscription "Excelsior".

Physical Geography

Aldeno is located about 10 km southwest of Trento, on the right bank of the Adige river. Its eastern slopes are part of the Monte Bondone group, the perfect place for nature lovers and outdoor walks.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Aldeno is a very interesting location for those who love to discover Italian history and culture. The atmosphere here is ancient, but at the same time, welcoming and familiar. Thank you for reading my article, and I hope to have piqued your curiosity to visit this beautiful town!
