This lovely town is home to around 44,451 people and is surrounded by the Gulf of Castellammare. To better understand this place, I have divided the article into several sections to talk to you about the physical geography, the origin of the name, and its history.
Physical Geography
Territory
Alcamo is located in the center of the Gulf of Castellammare, at the foot of Mount Bonifato, whose summit reaches 829 meters above sea level and boasts a protected natural area called "Bosco di Alcamo." Alcamo is about 258 meters above sea level and its territory also includes the fraction of Alcamo Marina, very popular in the summer as a resort area.
Climate
The climate in Alcamo is humid Mediterranean, with winters being much rainier than the summer period. The warmest month is August with average temperatures of around 25.8°C, while the coldest month is February, with average temperatures of around 11.2°C. The average annual rainfall is 558 millimeters, with December being the rainiest month.
Origins of the name
There are some theories about the origin of the name Alcamo. According to some hypotheses, the name derives from the Arabic word "al-qamah," which means "muddy land" or "land of fertility." Other theories instead argue that the name of the city derives from the Muslim leader Al-Qamūq, who would have founded the town in 828. According to some, this hypothesis is an invention of Leo Africanus. Another theory would derive the name from the dialectal term "caccamu," which indicates the Citrullus colocynthis plant, while a more interesting theory links the origin of the name to the legendary impregnable city of Camico, which would be located at the top of Mount Bonifato.
History
Prehistory
Alcamo, like many towns in Sicily, has an ancient history. In fact, in one of the oldest sites in the Alcamo area, in the Mulinello district, artifacts dating back to the Mesolithic period, around 9000-6000 BC, have been found.
Ancient history
The town easily endured Carthaginian rule and during the Roman Republic period came under the influence of Rome. In the Middle Ages, Alcamo became an important center of culture and art under the Normans, who built the castle and settled numerous cultivators to cultivate the territory. Over the centuries, it passed under the rule of Pisa, the Kingdom of Naples and, finally, the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
Contemporary era
During World War II, the town suffered serious damage due to Allied bombing. After the end of the conflict, a period of reconstruction began that led to significant development of the territory and demographic growth.
Today, Alcamo is a lively city full of history. Among the places of interest are the Castle of the Counts of Modica, the Mother Church and the Church of San Tommaso, also rich in art and history.
