Discovering Albosaggia: a village surrounded by nature

Hello friends, today I want to talk to you about Albosaggia, a municipality in the province of Sondrio located near the middle Valtellina, facing the city of Sondrio. Here it is possible to live in contact with nature and immerse yourself in the local history, between traces of Prehistory and noble families that made history.

Territory

The territory of Albosaggia is characterized by the presence of broadleaf and Pinophyta forests starting from 1,200 meters of altitude. Here you can admire specimens of Paridae, Tetrao urogallus, Glaucidium passerinum and various types of raptors, including the Golden eagle. The Orobie landscape also hosts deer, wild boars, Alpine ibex and Rupicapra.

Albosaggia: nature and history in Sondrio province

Origin of the name

The name Albosaggia could derive from Latin ''Alpes'' + ''agia, -ae'', meaning "mountain or holy place", or from the Roman Gens Albucia. Others claim that it comes from the Latin ''albosarius'' ("woodcutter").

History

The first traces of settlements in the area date back to Prehistory, as shown by the finding of a winged bronze axe. During the Roman Empire, the Valtellina was an important connection point between Cisalpine Gaul and Raetia, but there are no traces of urban centers founded in that period. The first documentary evidence of Albosaggia dates back to the 13th century, when the village that constituted the nucleus of the village was mentioned in documents. The Paribelli family, who made the history of Albosaggia, was awarded the title of "noble of the Holy Roman Empire" in 1581. Among the members of this family, we remember Lorenzo and Gian Giacomo, diplomats at European courts, and Cesare Paribelli, promoter of the Neapolitan Republic in the provisional government.

Society

Today, Albosaggia has about 2,997 inhabitants and its history is strongly linked to the presence of the Paribelli family.

Culture

Every year, Albosaggia hosts various events, such as Christmas markets and the literature festival "Il Paese delle Storie" in May.

Anthropogenic geography

The village is divided into four hamlets, including Porto, which takes its name from the function it once served as a starting point for boats that connected the village to Sondrio. Porto hosts a portion of the Valtellina Trail and overlooks the Adda River.
