Albissola Marina: the ceramic city in Liguria.

History

The city of Albissola Marina was founded by the Ligurians in prehistoric times, but it developed especially during the Roman Empire thanks to the proximity of the site of Alba Docilia, now included in the municipal territory of Albisola Superiore.

During the Early Middle Ages, Albissola Marina became an integral part of Vado Ligure, then Savona and finally its own marquisate led by the Aleramic descendant Guelfo d'Albisola in 1122. During this historical period, trade, agriculture, fishing, and ceramic manufacturing began to develop.

In 1251, Albissola Marina became an integral part of the Genoese domain after a long period of contrast between Savona and Genoa for the control of the Albisolese territory. In 1343, the three municipalities of Albisola, Celle Ligure, and Varazze swore their complete Genoese devotion.

The city was then incorporated into a special podestà (medieval mayorship) of the Republic of Genoa, with Varazze as the seat of the podestà, and providing the three main centers with autonomous statutes (rights) and locally managing public revenues. A part of the Albissola coastal area remained, however, within the Savonese borders until 1533.

In 1616, the historic separation of the two Albisolese villages into the two distinct municipalities of Albissola Marina and Albisola Superiore took place, which chose the banks of the Sansobbia torrent as the "natural border line".

Ceramic manufacturing

As we have already mentioned, Albissola Marina is famous for ceramic craftsmanship. This tradition has ancient roots and developed especially during the Renaissance.

Albissola Marina was one of the first Italian cities to import the colors of Hispano-Moresque ceramics during the 15th century. In the 16th century, the city began producing ceramics throughout the national territory and continued to do so until the 20th century.

The production of ceramics is still an important economic activity in Albissola Marina and a tourist attraction. The city also has a ceramic museum, where visitors can appreciate the history and beauty of this ancient art.

Conclusions

In summary, Albissola Marina is an Italian city in Liguria famous for ceramic manufacturing. Its history dates back to the Roman era and developed especially during the Renaissance. Today, the city is an important center for the production of ceramics and a tourist attraction. If you have the opportunity to visit Liguria, do not miss the chance to visit Albissola Marina and admire the beauty of its ceramics.
