Borzano: a hamlet in Albinea between history, nature, and sports

History

Borzano has an ancient and fascinating history. Its origin dates back to 896, when it was mentioned as "in Laudola prope Burcianò" in a document. In 1070, the village was granted to Bonifacio di Canossa by the Diocese of Reggio Emilia-Guastalla. In 1192, instead, Enrico VI of Swabia returned it to the same diocese. After the Congress of Vienna, Borzano was attached to Scandiano, and then included in Albinea after the Unification of Italy.

Monuments

Borzano boasts several monuments of historical and cultural interest. Among the religious buildings, the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Albinea and the Church of San Giovanni in Castello stand out. But the main attraction is certainly the Castle of Borzano, which dates back to the period between the 12th and 13th centuries. This castle, located on the hills surrounding the village, has been restored over the years and is visible from any position in the village.

Culture

If you are a fan of popular events, you cannot miss the Borzano fair. This fair, which takes place every third Sunday of July, reached its 210th edition in 2018. In addition to the fair, Borzano also organizes various cultural activities, such as art exhibitions and theatrical performances.

Sports

Borzano is also a great destination for outdoor sports enthusiasts. The local soccer team, Borzanese, participates in the Mountain Tournament, a soccer event reserved for the teams of the Reggio Apennines that has been held for over 60 editions. But not only soccer: since 2009, the Polisportiva Borzanese has organized and coordinated various sports activities, such as running, cycling, skiing, and winter sports. Among the most followed events are the Memorial Marco Conti 5-a-side soccer tournament, which takes place every year in May-June, and the non-competitive walk Un Gir per Bursan, which has gathered for over 30 years more than a thousand runners on the first Sunday of May.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Borzano is a charming location that satisfies everyone's tastes: from lovers of history and art, to nature and sports enthusiasts. Do not hesitate to visit it: you won't regret it!
