Carcano: a hamlet of Albavilla

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Carcano, a geographic hamlet of the Municipality of Albavilla, in the province of Como. It is located southeast of the town center, towards Alserio, and on the shores of Lake Alserio.

History

Carcano has an ancient history, dating back to the Lombards. Its name may derive from a duke belonging to this population. Later, it became a municipality of Milan and was the scene of the famous battle of Carcano against Frederick Barbarossa.

Officially registered in the records of 1751 together with the Corogna farmhouse, Carcano had 205 inhabitants at the time and was part of the Pieve di Incino. Over the years, it changed administrative references several times, belonging to the province of Como for a brief period in 1786 and definitively becoming part of it in 1801.

During the Kingdom of Italy (1805-1814), the population residing in Carcano was 307 inhabitants. In 1809, the municipality expanded thanks to a decree by Napoleon that annexed Alserio and Parravicino, but these decisions were cancelled upon the return of the Austrian Empire. In 1853, the population reached 471 people, rising to 517 in 1871. In 1921, there were 523 residents, but the fascist regime decided to definitively suppress the municipality in 1928, merging it with Albavilla.
